SENIOR STUDENT CIE EXAMINATION RELEASE DATE
The final attendance date for all year 11-13 students who are sitting Cambridge International Examinations is Friday 23 October. Students only need to attend school on the day of their examinations and are required to be in full school uniform on these days. Students are expected to engage in active study on the days between their examination papers.
SENIOR EXAMINATIONS
Years 11-13 students sit their final school examinations from 28 August – 4 September. The examinations closely model the CIE examinations students will sit in October and November. With examinations three weeks away, the importance of having sound study routines and compiling appropriate study notes must be stressed. Students have met with their tutors to discuss the importance of these examinations and have been issued a revision timetable so that they can begin a focussed study programme.
SUBJECT SELECTION
We had a pleasing number of parents and students attend the CIE evening held at the College recently. Years 10-12 students should now have completed their 2010 subject selection forms and returned these to the school office. Any student who wishes to receive further advice and guidance in selecting their subjects for next year should see their Dean, a Senior Manager or the Careers Adviser, Mrs Balchin.
Subject Selection sheets will be collated and processed over the coming weeks and this information will be used to plan our 2010 timetable and staffing requirements. Year 10 students will be given an opportunity to change their subject choices after they have sat their Term 4 examinations. Year 11 and Year 12 students will confirm their subject choices at the start of the 2010 academic year, after they have received their external examination marks.
ACADEMIC SUCCESS
Congratulations to the following students on their success in the University of New South Wales Science examination.

DROPPING STUDENTS OFF IN THE MORNING
Please ensure that you drop your child(ren) off at the lower car park in the morning. The number of cars driving all the way to the top roundabout is a real safety concern for our primary and college students. We would appreciate your co-operation in this regard. |
OPEN DAY
The final Open Day for the year will be held on Saturday 19 September. Please help us promote Strathallan by telling friends and neighbours about the Open Day.
ADVICE OF WITHDRAWAL
Parents who are considering the withdrawal of their child at the end of this year are reminded of the “Advice of Withdrawal” clause contained in the Contract of Enrolment section of the Application Form. The relevant section of the clause states “The Principal should be advised in writing of any withdrawal from ACG Strathallan. Advice should be given at the earliest possible time and in any case at least one term before it is effective. Tuition fees are payable until the end of the notice period. Where no notice is given, a fee to the amount of 25% (twenty five percent) of the annual tuition fee will be charged, payable to ACG Strathallan in lieu of notice.”
Early advice of withdrawal will greatly assist us in determining our staffing requirements for 2010 and will also avoid the need to charge a cancellation fee.
OVERDUE TUITION FEES
Outstanding tuition fees and /or CIE fees could result in students not being permitted to sit their Cambridge Exams. Please ensure all fees are paid by their due date, and any overdue amounts are cleared immediately, to avoid this.
All Plan 2 fees (three instalments per year) were due by 1 August.
All CIE Fees were due by 1 August.
The last payment for Plan 3 fees (nine monthly instalments) is due by 1 October.
QUIZ NIGHT
On Thursday 20 August, Strathallan is holding its inaugural Quiz Night. Get a team of 6 together ($30 entry) and submit your entry to Student Reception by 12 August. Nibbles will be provided and wine will be available on a cash-card basis. It promises to be a great night!

WORLD VISION 40 HOUR FAMINE
This year Strathallan College accepted the challenge of “raising the stakes” in the 40 hour famine with students raising the most amount of money for World Vision in the history of the school - a sum of $9842.80!!! My congratulations and sincere thanks to Mrs Hughes and the Famine committee (Elliot Hurst, Kimberley Scott, Rennie Qin, Georgia Robinson, Alex Pullin, Sophie Putz and Tiana Tagelagi) and to all the students who participated in the Famine this year, as well as their very generous sponsors. The money that has been raised this year will go towards combating malnutrition in developing countries around the world.
As a result of our fantastic efforts this year, Strathallan College was awarded a Senior Scholarship and a Gold Award from World Vision. The scholarship was awarded to Georgia Robinson (Year 12) and provides her with an all expenses paid trip to Wellington in the last week of the October holidays, where she will join other students developing leadership and communication skills, and learning about poverty and aid issues. Congratulations, Georgia!

MODEL UNITED NATIONS
From July the 4th to 7th, Strathallan College sent an 11-strong delegation to Wellington to participate in the 2009 New Zealand Model United Nations.
This annual event aims to bring together students from all over NZ, to educate them about International issues and the role of the United Nations.
This year’s NZ MUN was a test of stamina for our students who represented nations as far away and exotic as Papua New Guinea to Poland, Dominica to Demark, controversial and war-torn areas such as Lebanon and Iraq, big and powerful countries such as Mexico and China, and small and obscure such as Timor-Leste, Niger, and Malawi.
Our students came away from this event with a better awareness of global and national issues, and are dedicated to upholding the UN’s aims and spirit for the future.
SEPTEMBER HOLIDAY TUTORIALS
During the first week of the September holidays the College will be running CIE tutorials for all students sitting IGCSE, AS and A Level examinations. These will be of great benefit in preparing your child for the final examinations and it is highly recommended that they attend. More information about these tutorials will be sent home later in the term.
Of the 220 students who attended, Nicole Buxeda (Year 13) was one of twelve students selected to represent New Zealand in the International Model UN at The Hague, Netherlands in January 2010. The prestigious international meeting also includes visits to Thailand, Paris, Rome and Geneva. Congratulations, Nicole!
BOOK DONATION
Thank you once again to Sir Don McKinnon for his very generous donation of books to the school library. These books will be a very useful and valuable resource to student learning.
LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS
Congratulations to the cast, band and crew of this year’s production, Little Shop of Horrors. Once again, it was a tremendous success and a very enjoyable evening. Thanks must go to Glen Pickering, Guiney Ryan, Maylee Allen and Sophia Grobler for their sterling efforts, and to the many staff and parents who also volunteered their time and energy. We look forward to next year’s production.
DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY TOUR
During the recent three week holiday, 22 Year 12 and 13 students took part in a Design and Technology tour of some of the world’s premier design and architecture sites. The itinerary took in historical and contemporary design and cultural diversity through five different countries throughout Europe, the Middle East and Australia. Whilst there were plenty of incredible experiences the highlights included tours of St Pauls Cathedral and Wembley stadium in London, the Louvre (where the Mona Lisa is displayed) and the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The Brandenburg gate and the remnants of the Berlin Wall along with the Reichstag were very memorable moments from Berlin and the Jewish Museum, designed by Daniel Liebeskind, was an outstanding example of contemporary architecture. The largest aquarium and tallest building in the world (standing at a mere 850 metres tall) were found in Dubai alongside temperatures of up to 42 degrees centigrade. Finally, the Sydney Opera House and a jet boat ride around Sydney Harbour completed the trip.
CAPTAIN HOOK'S REVENCE
The Junior Pantomime/Production this year is Captain Hook’s Revenge. It will be performed on 25th & 26th November. The Pre-School, School and College students will watch it over the two days and there will be an evening performance for parents, siblings and students from other schools to watch it. The times and venue will be forwarded nearer to the time.
SPORT REPORT
Rugby
Congratulations to Mathew McCullough and Conor Kennedy who have been selected in the Roller Mills squad. This is a Counties Manukau representative team which will be playing in a tournament in the September holidays.
Trampolining
Melissa Thompsen recently competed at the Auckland Secondary Schools Gymsports in trampolining and placed first in the Womens B Grade. Melissa will also be competing in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships in September. Well done, Melissa.
Swimming
Aimee Moss competed at the Intercollegiate Individual Swimming Champs on Saturday 3 August and continued her excellent record of success, winning three events - 50m breaststroke, 50m freestyle and 100m freestyle. She also came third in the 100m individual medley. Overall, across all swimmers aged 13 to 17 at the event, she was the fastest in the 50m breaststroke, second in the 50m freestyle and second in the 100m freestyle. Congratulations, Aimee.
Netball
The Collegiate and U15 A team recently competed in the Secondary Schools Tournament at the Auckland Netball Centre. The competition is a big step up from their Saturday games at Papakura and it is an excellent opportunity to gauge our development. The U15 team played particularly well, being competitive in three of their five games. Well done girls.
The netball season winds up on Saturday, 22 August with the Papakura Netball Centre holding the Future Ferns prizegiving at 10am. The Junior, Intermediate and Collegiate grades have their prizegiving on 29 August at 10.00am, 11.30am and 1.00pm respectively. Strathallan will hold our netball prizegiving on Wednesday, 26 August at 3.30pm.
Junior Hockey
Both our Premier and C-Reserve teams are doing very well, sitting at the top of their grades. The Premier grade, now in their Championship Round, will play finals in mid September. The C-Reserve grade will decide the winner on points. Good luck teams.
Trophies
Please remind students who were awarded sports trophies last year, that they are to be returned to Lyn Craig, Sports Co-ordinator, in the Information Centre.
